Opinion: Don't try to winnow the Democratic field too quickly




I know, I know. The Democrats have too many presidential candidates. I was one of the folks who mocked the GOP's 17-candidate field as a clown car (or, rather, a clown limousine) back in 2016. The Democratic field, clocking in at more than two dozen candidates, must look to outsiders like a bus -- albeit a bus that runs on biofuels developed from organic, non-GMO, non-toxic, gluten-free, lactose-intolerant indigenous hemp. The debates are unwieldy and the policy distinctions are often picayune. Campaign staff are stretched thin, donors are annoyed, and volunteers are overworked. And don't get me started on the journalists, pundits, and pollsters who have to sift through all these entrails.
